Whoever
hasn't understood yet, Morgantown's weather is very much bipolar. In less than a week we go from a snowstorm to +22
degrees celsius and bright warm sunshine. Get to study outside in the end of November and renew my
tan. Weird!
Went to a yoga class and because of the weather we did it outside on
the tennis-court, it felt so relaxing, the theme was gratitude and
happiness, so it was double-lovely.
The
weekend was relaxing. Some people went to DC for the weekend, so the
house was more quiet.. Went running with Emnet on friday afternoon,
my first run outside in Morgantown, the trail alongside the river is
a nice place for running. In the evening went to Kane's place, he was
inn DC as well but gave his keys to Tito, had an awesome night with
the guys, talked, played GTA, some drinking games, listened to good
music and most of all experienced with Kane's DJ set, I honestly
think we would do a better job than the dj who was playing in Cellar
on saturday, it was just amateurish! Saturday was girly time, watched
movies with Emnet, Vivi, Jess and Ashley, drank champagne and ate ice
cream. Fahad's (Dubai) friend Matt was visiting, they joined us in the
evening and we heard a lot of interesting stories about Dubai. Later
went to Mujtaba's (Pakistan) birthday in a house, somewhere in the
forest, it was so crowded, and it was kind of on the edge of the
mountain, we were spending most of that time on the balcony, I was
sure the balcony is gonna break and we all fall down the mountain!
On
sunday I had the audition to CTA hiphop dance team and it went
great, I am officially in the team!
Occasionally
we get tired of the meal plan, so on sunday we had dinner in the
local sport's bar with the guys, as Matt also wanted to watch the
football game, Tennessee, his hometown was playing.
Yesterday
was Jessica's birthday. Went to a concert in the evening. Karmin was
playing. They sound even better in live, soulful, passionate and are
just lively and fun, the performance was a little short but still
awesome. The girl has a great voice and she can rap, better than any
other girl in the business, in my opinion.
Ended
the evening with another movie night downstairs. "City of God".
Another brilliant one, raw, disgusting and real. The action takes
place in the city of god, a slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The film
offers a look at gang life in the slum, as it follows the life of the
main characters through three decades: 60's, 70's and 80's, and shows
how violence just produces more violence, children are killing
children and no one does nothing about it.
Until
now my weirdest food-hall experience here in WVU was when we with
Emnet and Vivi had to sit in a table with a girl who had an extremely
high voice and the fact that she was talking through her nose didn't
make it better, she was talking non-stop to a guy about nonsense..
every after 5 minutes we had to take a walk and pretend we want to
take some more food or drink, because we just could not hold back
laughter for more than that amount of time at once. But today.. we
were peacefully enjoying our breakfast at Hatsfields, a friendly,
quiet and nice man in his mid forties asked if he can sit in our
table, well of course, five minutes later his wife came.. "David,
I just lost my place, because I had to turn around and give this
portfolio to you and now I didn't get my omelet" David
apologized and they both continued eating until he dared to ask what
kind of milk his wife had on the coffee.. She started screaming "
David!!!!! You know I drink regular, it has been six years, SIX
YEARS, I just can't take it any more.." And she kept going on
and on and on, and picked on everything, when David asked if he can
bring her anything, she snapped at him and when he was going to stand
up, she was like " if you are already up you could as well as
bring me an omelet" and when he was going to do that she decided
she still does not want any.. Oh my goodness, six years or not.. I
would not wait one more day to divorce that lady.
On
thursday I was working for a U.S PR company. It was busy, a little
tense and I loved it! We had two meetings before that and then we
were basically on our own, filming and interviewing the war veterans
(friday was Veteran's day). We basically had to improvise. A lot of
running around. Attended a presentation later where two inmates were
sharing their life-stories, had a class in the evening, a good
workout at rec with Emnet and Eugene, homework, girls talk, Vivi
giving Summer a makeover, dying of laughter before going to sleep -
days like these are a blessing.
On
friday went to KFC with Tito and Kane, it actually was the first time
ever I ate KFC. We were such demanding customers.. and we won a cake!
Also, it was the first official basketball game. WVU won, but the
game was close so the last minute we were jumping up and down,
screaming with Ashley and Emnet.. the guys took it a little more
calmly.. I guess it is a girl think, behind us there was an old lady
who was so passionate about the game, every other sentence she was
shouting was cursing – loudly!
Emnet
and Vivi have developed a routine of waking up early, they managed to
wake me up 8.40am on saturday as well. Watched "Se7en". We
are gonna watch all the great classics here. The movie has a certain
atmosphere, it starts dark, intense, mysterious and holds that mood
till the end. It is slow paced and takes time to develop the
characters without being obvious or cliché. Kevin Spacey in a role
of the murderer is excellent, bone chilling, seriously! And Brad Pitt
and Morgan Freeman as the main detectives are unlikely as well. The
crimes are inspired by seven deadly sins, and it is rare that a movie
has an ending you cannot predict at all. And I mean it! Everything
just falls into place and when a movie ends, you just stare at the tv
for a little while, before anybody is able to say something.
After
a chillout at Kane's, the guys wanted to go play drunk basketball..
it was fun, until the play got aggressive and things got a little out
of hand. What's funny about West Virginia.. they don't lock the
doors.. I have till now “broke into” the library.. a couple of
times.. it was one sunday morning about 11 o'clock, I went in, the
lights were down and it was deserted but oh well.. went to the
sixth floor, enjoyed the view and did my homework, when I left there
a couple of hours later I discovered the library opens at 1pm on
weekends. And now when we went to play
basketball about 2am at night.. I think it is not supposed to be open 24/7. Cannot imagine that
kind of behavior in Estonia, open rooms would be destroyed in
seconds. It is different here, and I actually cannot remember the
last time we locked our dorm room.. if you do not count the times we are
inside and wanna change clothes without somebody running in at the same time.
Another movie night, another movie: "Animal Kingdom" I wanted to
watch it already when it was nominated in the Oscars, enjoyed it a lot, we need more couches to the living room,
although we have a lot of them, our movie nights are becoming more
and more popular. The movie was enchanting. An Australian movie,
actors mostly not well-known, but promising, plot was original and
full of "surprises". The movie is slow but intense and
managed to keep us focused, the culmination actually is in the
ending, which is both shocking and yet inevitable.
Attended
a conference yesterday about news broadcasting and the future of
journalism. Mark Whittaker from CNN was the main speaker and it was
great!
Went
to a house-party at Mercedes's (Usa) place on wednesday, as they are
all dancers in Morgantown Dance Company, it was fun for me, all the
conversations and jokes, something familiar! They had just had some
huge auditions in their company for the spring performance, they were
so excited, could just relate the scene to some dance movie. It was a
really fun night! In the end walked back home with Chris and Adeline,
we sent her to Arnolds and instead of going home ourselves, went and
bought some champagne 3am in the morning and went to Esteban's.
After an hour walked home and found the guys playing
FIFA downstairs.. nothing surprising here.. made it to bed around 5.
Thursday
evening went to witness another basketball game. We won, big time,
but just because the opponents were really bad, they had skills
individually but team chemistry was a zero.
Went
to 500 Forrest Avenue Thanksgiving sendoff banger, that Zach (Usa)
and his friends organized in their house. It was a good evening,
hadn't seen some of my favorite people in a while. At night mostly
goofed around in the house. Today, has been such a good day.
Everybody is so excited about our Thanksgiving break. Ihouse guys
went to Florida, Miami, by car. I really hope they make it there
safe, the ride is at least 20 hours. After sending them off, we had
the house for ourselves and we had a lot of snacks as we went to
"grocery shopping" in the morning, meaning, having brunch
at Stalnaker diner. As we love to steal food from there, and this
time they had basically packed stuff to go and of course we couldn't
resist ice cream, we left there with a lot of stuff. Finally watched
"The A-Team". It was not as bad as everyone had said, I
kinda enjoyed it, the fact that Bradley Cooper was in it, gave a lot
of plus points for me.
On
saturday, woke up because Vivi ran into our room and scared us as we
were sure we had slept in, actually our clocks were gonna go off in 2
minutes. With a little delay we started our trip to NEW YORK CITY at
8.40am with two packed cars.
The
excitement that hit us when we were reaching the city is
indescribable, it was just so much fun, we were screaming and
laughing in the car. The perfect feeling. The city was..IS, so alive!
There's nothing like New York, I love this city so much! We got to
our apartment after some traffic jams and one wrong turn.. and, it's
a m a z i n g. A penthouse in Brooklyn, Williamsburg. From the roof
we see Brooklyn Bridge and the city in lights and from our balcony on
the other side, there's the Empire state building!
On
saturday evening went to an indian restaurant, it was good and I
finally tried the delicious Mango Lassi, Sunday, decided to use the
beautiful weather and took the subway down to Brighton Beach. Were
just goofing around on the beach and pier, talking, taking pictures
and dancing some salsa with Brazilians who were jamming near the
pier. Ate lunch in a Japanese place, sushi - yes! Walked to Coney
Island. The end of Brooklyn. Tried possibly the best hot dog in NYC,
took a long train ride back to town (and fell asleep), headed to the
heart of Manhattan, Times Square! At night it is just amazing!
Walking around, visiting the stores for fun, like kids in a candy
store (at some point we of course went to the candy store – the
wonderful M&M's world). It didn't matter we all had been to NY,
we were just enjoying! After sitting in the middle of the square and
observing everything for a while headed on to the fifth avenue and
found a Vietnamese restaurant, Vivi was right Vietnamese coffee is
excellent and the soup was as well one of the most interesting things
I have eaten. Kept walking round Manhattan and went to Chinatown at
night, I have been in chinatown before, but never actually known
where I am or where to go, with Kane it was much more exciting. Got
some late night food to go and, when our legs were basically killing
us, we had to surrender to the city and go back to our precious
apartment.
Monday
started with a Chinatown brunch in one Dim Sum restaurant. Never had
that experience, aside Kane and Tim we were all shocked at first, it
was huge, crowded, but the same moment we were seated, somebody came
and without no further notice, literally threw the cups, chopsticks
and teapots to the table, two seconds later, all kind of foods were
placed to the table, we were just sitting still and carefully
observing, as we were starving started eating quickly, occasionally
the lady came and added more stuff, it was delicious, everything!
Kane and Tim tried to explain what was what, but it was a lot, so now
thinking back I'm still not sure what was what. But it was a really
fun experience and so cheap and delicious! The guys told us on the
previous day that Chinese waitresses are the rudest, now we exactly
know what they mean, they are not being rude on purpose, but it just
comes through like this to everybody else! Discovered some more of
chinatown, chewed some sugarcane on the street and went to Ground
Zero memorial. Amazing progress since I last was there, the financial
centers are standing, the freedom tower is almost ready, plus the
memorial park and the fountain, a lot of it is still under
construction, what worries me is that the project matters so much to
everybody, once it is finished it also becomes one of the weaknesses.
Walked around Wall street area and went back to the 5th avenue to
explore the biggest apple store, as Eugene needed to buy a macbook.
The shop has high tech systems and a lot of entertainment. At 7pm,
went to see a show near Rockefeller centre and then to Korean bbq,
after that an immediate need of ice cream made us go to the 34th
avenue Baskin-Robbins and get some ice-cream. 34th avenue was filled
with cheerleaders and mascots, everybody was dancing and singing and
cheering.
On
monday we managed to go to bed 5am, and Eugene woke me up around 7,
it was not hard to fall back asleep. I went to meet some people I know
and then to Broadway Dance centre. It has been two years since I last
was there, first: Kelly Peters hiphop class, HE IS INSANE!! I really
felt my brain hurt, but it was awesome! After that Luam's hiphop
class. It was so crowded, but her funky style is unique. The choreo
was so soulful, enjoyable.. Just had to feel the music.. let it
inside and make it my own! Afterwards went to Queens Chinatown, Kane
is familiar with the place, so we knew where to go.. almost... the
traffic was really bad, we lost Kane's car in traffic, and of course
our GPS went a little nuts at that moment, got a little lost. But the
restaurant! Could grill the raw meat on the plate on our table, it
was a lot of fun and we could eat as much as we wanted.. Can't
imagine, how I not long ago couldn't eat with chopsticks, now I can't
imagine eating with a fork and knife! And Asian cuisine is amazing!
At night were just chillin at home, when really wanted to smoke
hookah.. Kane just decided to buy one..we remembered an indian store
on the way from subway to our place, despite the rain, went to check
that out with Kane and Tito. Got the hookah and had fun with random
people at a pizza cafe, got home, woke up Vivi and Bo and enjoyed our
night!
Wednesday
was a shopping day, what better place than New York City, would you
pick for that?? Got all together again at night and went to SOHO and
had dinner at a Japanese restaurant with some of Kane's and Bo's
highschool friends, again some interesting foods, I haven't really
eaten before, and again ended the evening with a delicious ice cream.
The place was very interesting, it sold flavors like sesame or
wasabi.. I decided to go for tiramisu and strawberry cheesecake. At
night wanted to go to Pacha club as we were on the guest list, the
night didn't exactly turn out as planned, but we ended up coming back
from uptown Manhattan to Williamsburg by a party limousine, so it
turned out even better! The emotions were so high!
Thursday
was Thanksgiving, we actually managed to wake up somewhere between 8
and 9am, and made it to 34th avenue to see Macy's Thanksgiving Day
parade! Pikacchhhuuuu, is still my favorite! In the evening,
thanksgiving shopping and we cooked our own Thanksgiving dinner,
turkey, mashed potatoes, salsa, beans, vegetables, cranberry sauce..
everything! It was my first ever Thanksgiving dinner!
At
night went to explore Central park, the skating rink and walked down
5th avenue to Times square. Everything is so beautiful, christmas
decorations, christmas songs, happy people. And the Black Friday, was
fun to watch people desperately waiting for the sales. Black Friday
is like another holiday to a lot of people, they were waiting before
midnight for the shops to open, camping in front of them, although
they opened early in the morning.
Walked
the Brooklyn Bridge on friday, just for a view, Manhattan in full
lights is priceless, doesn't matter how many times you've seen it.
After kebab for dinner, watched WVU vs PITT game, after the
adrenaline rush in the end, WVU won 21:20 the feeling was satisfied
and fulfilled!
TONIGHT,
TONIGHT PARTY ON THE ROOFTOP, TOP OF THE WORLD - this song is in my
head forever.. I very much enjoyed our last night in New York City!!
Saturday
had to wake up pretty early, left the beautiful city around 11,
stopped in New Jersey for food and Kane's car left to Virginia to
take Bo back to her school, we headed towards Morgantown, the others
were mainly sleeping, me and Tito were at first again fighting with
the radio but soon discovered from laptop we can listen better music
and almost as loud. Morgantown was still empty when we got back. As
we couldn't get to I-House yet, we all camped at Kane's place this
night, ordered pizza and talked until fell asleep. Back in I-House
the next day, started the second half of the semester with a
traditional movie-night: “The Last of the Mohicans"
