On
sunday it was Chinese New Year celebrations. Attended a Lunar New
Year Parade in Chinatown. First Chinese food, then the parade, that
was really colorful and fun. We were all covered with confetti and
silly strings. In the end walked around and went to Heartland Brewery
with Todd (Usa), Liam (UK), Jihye (South-Korea), Kristen and Marcy
(Usa). Tried a beer that tasted like chocolate/espresso. Ended the
day with a long and progressive training! Monday started with 8 am
training again, also had to give 3 classes, as Alicia felt sick and
asked me to help out. In the evening was just chilling with Talha at
his place in Queens. Ordering in, being lazy and watching movies.
"Mardi Gras: Spring break", a silly movie, but brings me to
our coming Spring Break. I guess I-House is going to Panama city
beach in march. Can not wait!
On
tuesday, after the classes, decided to enjoy the warmth with Jihye
and walk around in the city. Entered a new art gallery. It was an
opening event. The owner came to greet us and the first question was,
where are you from. As internationals we are used to that and
answered casually: Korea, Estonia. He looked at us weirdly and added
that, no no I meant what company are you from? We were almost ready
to make up some stories about some Korean-Estonian art gallery, when
somebody called him, he got distracted and it was our clue to move.
Not go away, but go inside. The exhibition was interesting and a
little surreal, plus there was free snacks and wine. Not a bad deal.
After, walked about 40 more blocks and went to the Couchsurfing
tuesday weekly meet-up. It was in a Texas bar called Rodeo in Lower
East Side. It's a tradition in Texas to throw the shells of peanuts
on the ground after eating them, the whole floor was covered with
them. Peanuts and nachos were free all night. Also, as one of our
friends works in Heineken and it was the end of the month he had a
lot of bar credit, so beer was free as well.
On
wednesday I managed to twist my ankle kind and asked Alicia to give
my class and was just chilling in our back yard as the weather was
summerly, trying to finish some paperwork and other unfinished tasks.
In the evening, stored my stuff at a friends house who lives next to
bus station on 35th street and met with Jihye again, enjoyed the
moment for a while at Times Square and headed to Nicky's (Usa) place
for a CS mid-week dinner. Cool people, delicious barbecue and
homemade Margaritas, started playing Kings in the end which lead to
almost missing my bus back to Morgantown.
MORGANTOWN:
Kane
picked me up from the bus stop with news that we are going
snowboarding. I do like spontaneity. Went to Wisp resort in Maryland.
Was awesome. The slopes were pretty decent. Apparently I am a pretty
good teacher as well. After 4 hours of fun we were all starving, and
nothing was open round there, so had to drive back to Morgantown to
get some food. KFC it was! It was pretty late, but decided to go out
with Carmen and Juen. After all I had promised Amir to meet him at
night and I hadn't even seen the I-House guys yet as I got back to
town and we left to Wisp immediately. After making sure people are in
Shooters we headed there.. I truly love you guys. The first 10
minutes I thought they're gonna kill me with hugs. And the night was
so much fun, got a little too crazy but what happens in Motown, stays
in Motown.
Friday
evening were chillin at Kane's and later downtown couldn't decide
where to go, everyone was at a different spot, so decided to go to
Lea's house, as she lives way up the hill in a lil difficult place, I
managed to do some comedy on the way up.
The
keyword of saturday is LAUGHTER. More than I have been laughing in
past few months probably. We started with Emnet and Eugene in the
morning, around 5 met up with Amir, Ayah and Fabi and headed to AL's
pizza. The best pizza in Morgantown. We were starving, and had to
wait for the bus. Yes we went crazy. So when we finally got there, we
ordered two large pizzas for 4 people. And large means super extra
huge in USA, we still almost finished it all, and were dead. When
Fabi wanted ice-cream and we headed to McDonalds, none of us could
resist. Terrible! Had a house party at Kane's later on.
Shot-roulette. The game was not that lucky for Hugo and Juen. Amir's
delicious margaritas and our homemade "messy blowjobs" For
some reason we were all covered with whipped cream after. A crazy
car-ride later, back downtown and to Cellar. Finished the night in
Casa de Amici!
On Sunday, took a short trip to Pittsburgh with Kane, to pick up Krasimir from
the airport, he was returning from Illinois. Back in Morgantown, a
superbowl party at the I-House, Giants vs Patriots. NY vs Boston.
Apart Ashley and Juen everybody was rooting for Giants. It was a
close and exciting game. Were screaming and yelling and laughing.
Pizza was delicious, commercials funny, Madonna's half-time show was
interesting and in the end Giants won! Went outside and saw a couch
burning up the hill. It was in front of the Back house (the house of
one guy from Krasimir's fraternity). Went up there and witnessed a
police coming to solve the situation. When back at I-House, the guys
had decided it's a good idea to go out on sunday night. Went to
Shooters and it was basically just our people, talking and playing
fooseball and pool..
NYC:
Annu
was visiting me for two weeks. It was fun to do some of the touristy
things again with her, also my first time to really couchsurf –
just for the experience. We had good times. I guess the highlights
would be the restaurant opening we attended with her and Jihye, and
the Grammy watching evening at Daniels condo, or the wednesday night
at Nicky's, the next morning will forever remind me not drink cheap
tequila! Chris came to visit one weekend, some pub-crawling and
Johan's (Usa) anti-valentines day slumber party and as monday was
president's day, it was another long weekend, sushi and a NY-style
college party at Ed's (Usa) place in Jamaica, Brooklyn.
Past
week has been crazy in the amount of trainings and work and classes.
Alicia and Joanna got back to town 2 days ago, so until that we had
to cover their classes as well. My kids are going to perform next
friday at their school talent show, and we have some performances
pretty close by as well. Have been killing ourselves a little. Also, working with the kids after hours, I didn't remember middle
school math being so confusing.
CS
weekly meetups are still awesome, I promoted it among some travelers
I know and after they attended last thursday they were really
thankful.
Last
friday me and Jihye decided to have a proper girls night out, which
turned out to be one of the craziest and fanciest ones. After
discovering the line to Pacha and deciding we can't handle the cold,
were walking back, when a “tornado” attacked us, as club Yotel
was nearby we searched for shelter there. The cover was expensive and
we were about to move on when a guy walked up to us and asked if we
wanna come in, ended up entering for free and partying in vip with
Hollister and Abercrombie&Fitch models, after that moving on to a
pretty prestigious hookah bar/club Veranda in the other end of the
city, where the party continued dancing in the dj booth, was a pretty
perfect night out. Cherry on top, we got a free limo ride back home
to Jihyes place in New Jersey!
BOSTON:
Krasimir
came to NY and we went to Boston with him, Jihye, her brother Jihyo
and Kristen, such an epic trip.. mainly because of all our
misconnection. Some of the best jokes were born that day! Visited 3
of US main universities, witnessed a Boston street show, had dinner
in hipster'ish Quincy market, and lost our car in Boston.. when being
in a new town, would be wise to watch the corner we park at least.
Ended the night in a cosy lounge called Living Room, watching the
84th Academy awards, which reminds me to watch some of the movies
from there. I have to say it is the first year in a while, I'm
absolutely not familiar with the movies. I have seen one or two of
the nominations. "The Artist" that won a lot, including the
best picture, is not appealing at all, tho I guess I have to watch it
before criticizing it. Started our way back to NY around 1am, made it
round 5am. The last hour was painful. In the end we were talking
about street signs and everything as random as that and made a lot of
stops to let in cold air. I don't know how he found energy driving
back to Morgantown the same night.
