I love that time of the year where there are so many new good movies that there is usually no time to see them all. I have had this tradition for ages that I try to watch all of the best Picture, Director, Actor and Actress nominees before the event. I have´t completely managed for a previous couple of years, but did this year (barely). Watched the most easily accessible one (Roma, on Netflix) a day before. Also, haven´t been able to watch Oscars live for the past two years because of work and whatnot, but as Filmzone was screening it live this year, we decided to give it a go again. It´s so much more special to watch it live. Headed to a friend´s place for a watch party with the last bus on Sunday night and wined, dined, chatted and commented on the red carpet outfits until 3 am. We all had played the guessing game as well, I got 17/24 right.
It was the first hostless year in a long time, but it worked out really good, presenters took on a bit of the hosts roles and the opening speech was excellently replaced by Queen and Adam Lambert´s performance of „We will rock you“ and „We are the champions“. So, so good!
I got to see Queen and Adam play in Tallinn in 2016, obviously I wish I could have seen Queen play with Freddie as they are one of my all time favorite bands, but seeing them with Adam still totally rocking it in their 70´s is the next best thing. I would without hesitation buy tickets to another show if they´ll come nearby again.
Back to the movies, it was a good year, but if I´d have to pick five, I guess it would be (in a random order): „Bohemian Rhapsody“, „Green Book“, „Star is Born“, „Black Panther“ and „The Favourite“. Also really liked „If Beale street could talk“ and „The Wife“. Olivia Colman's utterly sincere and emotional speech was the best, also Rami Malek's, many women won in different categories, especially shorts, Spike Lee's speech was inspired and lively, yet it seems he was a sore loser. All in all it was a great night!
And that performance…
