April 2024.
How many years have we been going to Brussels regularly? It was always just a few hours away. Finally made it!
First up, Reims, a the largest city in the Champagne region. It is equally charming and historic, as it is a great starting point for the champagne tour.
The gorgeous gothic Cathédrale Notre Dame de Reims, a really impresive cathedral dating back to the 1200s. It served as the site for royal coronations for hundreds of years.
Also, my first time ever being on an elevator with a car.
And the cathedral in the daylight.
Quick lunch before going for the main attraction.
You guessed it, Champagne!
We visited three Champagne houses. First one is rumored to be one of George and Amal Clooney's favorites as well.
The whole experience was a lot more affordable than I would have guessed. In some places tasting is free, as they expect you buy to go as well. In other places it costs around 20€. Many of the bottles start from 20€ as well. Obviously there are much more expensive and high end experiences possible, but it's not obligatory to enjoy the beautiful area and the bubbles!
The Saint-Martin Portal aka the Saint-Martin Gate, all that is remaining of the old Notre-Dame church in Epernay.
The luxurious Moët & Chandon shop/museum on Avenue de Champagne
And Dom Pierre Perignon's burial site at Abbaye Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers. In a period when the region's wines were primarily red, mr Perignon, a French Benedictine monk, made significant improvements to the production and quality of Champagne wine.
Fantastic long weekend, wouldn't absolutely mind going back there to explore more of the region and its Champagne houses.
