Tutunup diaries vol 12: end of chapter 1

Finished working and leaving Capel tomorrow. Time to head south. Clair helped us organize our route a bit, we literally didn't have any exact plans until just now. First Albany, then Esperance and theennn a looonnnggg deserted way to cross the Nullarbor Plain. The route in total will be more than 3000 km!

Fun fact of the day. We all got fired on thursday. One day before actually being finished. We were working at the mandarin farm for the first time and I am pretty sure some new ladies did not understand english enough to understand what exactly were they asked to do, so it would've been pointless for Heath to do the work after somebody had already done it wrong or incomplete, so he sent us all home.

It wasn't really getting fired, more like a friendly "it's great you came, even better that you go". According to our bosses Estonians are still highly valued and they would even give us a recommendation if needed, I guess at least we still managed to do a decent job and keep up the hard-working spirit of the Estonian nation. (Or we are just good at pretending to be something we are not.. go figure)  We had a good laugh while driving home. Plus, it was Sarah's birthday - celebrations could start early!

Happy birthday dear Sarah!

When losers had to go "in the pool"… I guess "on the pool" would do

Brunch at "Fat bird" cafe. The most adorable little cafeteria in the whole town. They had a sign "come as strangers, leave as friends" that was truly accurate. We managed to visit all the social places of Capel. A pub, a country club, two cafes and a gas station that also served fast food.

Do we really have that much crap??

Had my first fall off the longboard yesterday. Bruce gave us a proper lesson of what we can actually do with these boards. He hasn't been on a board for 25 years but rode like a pro. I guess it is the same as learning to drive a bike - once you get it, you never forget it. It was hot, we were wearing dresses, got so carried away practicing - until - got too brave and well.. Couple of bruises and scratches here and there.. Contused my hand pretty bad but a pack of ice makes wonders. Had to play pool in the evening so no time to really sob over it.

Hitchhiked to Bunbury today. To Kmart to buy a new home (a tent). 19 dollars!! A guy picked us up pretty quickly with a car that had just one seat, I was wondering if he wants to put us into the trunk, but he thought we could squeeze onto the one seat. We did. It is just 20 something kilometers. (The police was luckily not very active on the roads.) He was from Perth, not local, so we did a little detour to suburbs of Bunbury which apparently look exactly like suburbs in Perth..

Coming back was the quickest ever. I literally couldn't even put my thumb up when a car stopped. Two ladies went to play golf and took us half way. Already managed to tell them all our further plans and make even them worried about us. When on the road again, also, the first car stopped. A guy going to work in Busselton, he was not late yet, so dropped us onto Capel's main street and home we were.

To sum up: working in Tutunup farms, well – tiring as any other farm-work. Pays decent. We had several encounters with the bosses and at times there were things we were deeply mad about. Then again, I've heard horror-stories about Australian bosses. Ours were fairly nice. We always had work and got paid close to what we calculated what we should get. Only thing, I wish they would've mentioned it before that it is not gonna be just hourly rate but half of work is on contract aka per vines which tampered with the amounts we received. Other than that we had fun work-mates and an awesome home there. Thank you Clair and Bruce for everything, we had such a blast! Gonna miss you heaps and our tiny Capel as well! I just know we will see you soon! xx

Our Aussie family! PS: notice the dresscode!

Expect the unexpected! We thought our farm days are gonna be horrible - living in the smallest town would be boring, we would have nothing to do but read books and save money. Boyyyy were we wrong. Wouldn't change these few months for anything!

Ibiza, Spain

June 2023 Last time we were on a work-trip to Brussels, decided to take advantage of cheap Ryanair mid-Europe flights and flew to Ibiza for a long weekend. Had been wanting to check this party-hub out for some time. It's dreamy, gorgeous, vibrant, fun and quite expensive. So, in my opinion, a long weekend is exactly a right amount of time to be spent there!
