Melbourne vol 2

.. about lazy bosses, chaotic city and never ending job searches.
Don't get me wrong, I still adore Melbourne!

Last week can be summed up by two words: heat wave! 40 + degrees pretty much every day and night. Yes, nights were not much cooler. On thursday, 16th of january, Adelaide was the hottest city on the planet with 46 degrees. Our 44 degrees here in Melbourne got pretty close. Public transport was delayed. this is said nicely, as it often wasn't seen at all. Most of the trams were out of order and other half were somehow redirected. Air-conditioners were not working inside the transport or inside some cafes, bars and restaurants. Most eating-places took the easy way out and shut the place down for the daytime. Ice machines were not working, so you couldn't get the 1 dollar iced coke from Hungry Jacks or even the 3 dollar iced slurpee from 7-Eleven. It was pretty chaotic, annoying, yet a bit fun to observe. The not so fun part was that the heat caused several fires. One posh restaurant in St. Kilda burned down completely.

Thursday was supposed to be my first day at work in a carwash office, I got there at 9am, the boss tried to convince me that I do not want to work without an AC in this weather. I did, so he admitted, he really doesn't. And why he didn't call me before to say so.. because he thought that I would be disappointed. I definitely wasn't now, when I had woken up early, went there and then got the news.. smh. Thankfully it is walking distance.

Speaking of work, had another interview on Tuesday, some kinda retail position, we weren't crazy about that, but desperate enough, when we got there it came out it is about D2D sales.. Oh Hell NO! The moment the overconfident interviewer finished with the introduction and gave whoever is not interested a possibility to leave, me, Keiu and 8 other people of the 12 who attended the group interview, stood up and left. Still not that desperate.

At the moment we both work at a carwash. Neither of us is crazy about that job, as the boss is lazy and with not the nicest personality, but it pays the bills. We attended another interview on friday at Star Recruitment agency. We may get casual jobs that pay well from there. The manager is nice, the atmosphere seemed lovely, fingers crossed. As we had to complete a portfolio for the agency, half of saturday went to photo-shooting, which was already fun on its own.

Yesterday was my actual first day at the carwash then.I'm doing reception work for it. I felt like in a call-centre most of the time. Two phones to handle, and usually they ring at the same time. Tried to fix a printer, figure out what's wrong with the internet, make some sort of a written system for my boss, type in a lot of codes, communicate to some angry clients, get stuck in a toilet.. usual casual. It wouldn't be half as bad if the guy had just a tiny bit better attitude towards the clients, life, well everything.

On other news, Christian and Francoise came to Melbourne to visit us. Been visiting some night markets. Melbourne's markets have usually once a week a time when they are open late: lots of great food, drinks and live performances. As there are many markets in Melbs, there is one almost every night. Thursday was a beach day, spent the afternoon at St. Kilda beach with our roommates Agata and Yvonne and their friend Georgia. The water was like in the bath tub but it was better than nothing, it was too hot anywhere else. Some backpackers were handing out club flyers. So in the evening we headed  to The Base, where ladies and ladyboys got 4 dollar drinks, which is realllyyy cheap for Melbourne. I still can't believe Christian convinced Francoise to wear ladies clothes. Played pool over some time, our practice sessions in Capel payed off! The music was fun, pop-hits mainly, but not the ones that are in the radios now but were couple of years ago.

Saturday night we decided to prove the boys wrong, for some reason they had an impression from Adelaide that we can't cook, so we invited them for dinner at our place. Cooked some house-special asian food and discovered Chapel street from the rooftops.

Weren't too eager to wake up early on sunday morning but we wanted to get the free city-walking tour at 10.30. Missed it.. again!!! 4th time or so we have been thinking about going but for different reasons never made it there. Waking up early still led to a cultural day. Met Sinead and her friend Naomi. Great catching up. + visited some museums: ACCA and the Museum of Moving Image. Discovered street art and had dinner at Abbotsford at a restaurant called "Lentil as anything". Vegan food buffet on pay what you wish basis. Good food, cool atmosphere, there is always a line out of door, definitely worth a visit!!

Monday evening made it to a free comedy night at Spleen! Half open-mic, but most performers were approved comedians and some were spectacular! It may just become a weekly thing for us! Thankfully Melbourne cbd is pretty much a chinatown so grabbed some thai food after as we were starving!
And the Academy awards nominations are out!!!!! Can't wait to see all the movies. Got started yesterday. Headed to Palace cinemas to see "American Hustle". Excellent actors: Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner etc. The plot was totally random at some point, comedy, drama, whatever - great entertainment! There wasn't even much action but the 2.5 hours went by flying!! Nothing too deep, but lots of witty dialogues and well, I do not necessarily get the nomination for the best picture, but the actors definitely deserve their nominations.

June 2023 Last time we were on a work-trip to Brussels, decided to take advantage of cheap Ryanair mid-Europe flights and flew to Ibiza for a long weekend. Had been wanting to check this party-hub out for some time. It's dreamy, gorgeous, vibrant, fun and quite expensive. So, in my opinion, a long weekend is exactly a right amount of time to be spent there!
